Carnival

Photo: Carnival drummersCandombes (Uruguayan drummers) filled the streets pounding tribal rhythms on their drums and colorful singers and feather topped dancers followed. It was Carnival time!

On our way to Carmelo we found a cute little wine and cheese shop with a fun patio and garden. The owners let us tour their cheese storage. Incredible smells of blues, brie and their most famous parmesan filled the room. We sampled an enormous fruit and cheese platter. It was amazing and yummy.

We then left for the little town of Carmelo located on the Rio de Plata and found our cozy hotel that the girls at the cheese shop had reserved for us. Along the way a terrible storm started, the whole sky turned purple with flashes of lightning. It was actually a bit scary. The next morning the sun was shining and we explored the cobbled streets of Carmelo. Later that night we had the chance to experience the first night of Carnival. The parade was fantastic with everyone in their festive outfits.

There were people young and old, all participating in the festivities. After a very late night, we woke up early and left for Colonia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO is a worldwide organization that works to protect natural and cultural heritage. We knew it would be another great adventure full of interesting old world history. The town was full of historic sites like the Lighthouse de Sacramento and the Wharf of Colonia built in 1866, so much history to learn about in such a short time. At our hotel there was a kids club with lots of fun activities like fishing, baking cookies, ping pong and foosball championships. I made friends with some girls from Argentina, even though there was a language gap we still had a great time together.

There were two more nights of carnival celebrations in Colonia. On the last night we found an awesome restaurant with an old car that they had fixed up with a table and bean bags. We had a cool Carnival dinner in that antique car and ended the night once again to the rhythm of the candombes. Ciao Carnival and Ciao Uruguay!
